10 Most Popular Small Dog Breeds
Small dog owners unite! These little rascals are a big deal because not only are they undeniably adorable, they’re also easier to own. Small dogs are favored by many because they tend to be easier to bathe, walk, feed, and care for than their larger (though equally lovable) counterparts. Among the small dog breeds, a few stand out. These are (in no particular order) the top 10 most easy-going, popular small dog breeds (and why people love them so much).
1. Chihuahua
Chihuahuas are fun, playful, and loyal little dogs. They are energetic and very affectionate. In spite of this, Chihuahuas don’t need a ton of exercise. What’s more, they also travel well and have a long lifespan, which means they are companions you can truly bond with. Oh, they are also adorable (for proof of this, check out Tuna Melts My Heart on Instagram).
2. Maltese
Small and fluffy, Maltese dogs consistently top “most popular” small dog breed lists. They’re known for being smart and easy to train (such as the registered therapy Maltese pups that are the stars of the Coco the Maltese Instagram account). Maltese dogs are also friendly with strangers, children, and other animals (they’re very peaceful). Further, they don’t shed much, which makes them a great choice for those who suffer with allergies.
3. Dachshund
Another popular and easygoing small dog breed is the Dachshund. They are very good natured and get along well with others as evidenced by two of Instagram’s most popular little “weenies dogs,” Harlow and Sage, who reside with two other dogs. In addition to being friendly, they’re known for being loyal and good little watchdogs. Because they’re tiny, they’re great for families living in small spaces.
4. Shih Tzu
With big, round pleading eyes and long, shaggy hair, Shih Tzus are too cute and cuddly for their own good. (This is why so many can’t get enough of Dougie the Shih Tzu via dailydougie on Instagram.) They are soft and affectionate. They are very social and trusting as well, so they are great for families or for people with friends and frequents guests. They also love attention, which means they’re excellent companions.
5. Pomeranian
Though not all Pomeranians look like Instagram’s most popular pup, the clipped and coiffed Jiff Pom, they do all have the same adorable little faces, intelligence, and amiable dispositions. Pomeranians are small and delicate dogs (so, they may not be great for young children); though, they’re good pets. They’re loyal and have a lot of spunk, which goes well with their beautiful, floppy hair styles.
6. Boston Terrier
With quirky expressions and too-cute black and white markings, Boston Terriers are a fun small dog to own. They’re popular because they are intelligent, charming, and loyal. Meanwhile, they make exemplary watch dogs and are easy to train. Because of their energy and versatility, Boston Terriers are a very popular small dog breed.
7. Pug
Pugs are wonderful small dog breeds for families because they love children. Pugs are not only smart and observant, but they’re also friendly and playful. They are also precious with their seemingly tucked in mouths and smooshed noses (Doug the Pug’s of itsdoughthepug is proof of this.). The shape of their face not only makes them cute to look at, but it also is part of the reason they’re considered family-friendly—the shape of their face makes it harder for them to bite when maybe young and unwitting children play too roughly.
8. Bichon Frisé
For anyone looking for a laid-back but playful pet, Bichon Frisé is the way to go. These small, fluffy dogs often characterized by their bouffant hairdos, are not big shedders, which is always a plus. They are smart and enjoy learning tricks. They also like (and need) daily exercise and a fair amount of play. They’re popular among small dog lovers who want a companion who will both cuddle and get out of the house with them.
9. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Among the most easy-going popular small dog breeds, King Charles Spaniels reign supreme. They are very well tempered and are not overreactive; King Charles Spaniels are known for being gentle. They love spending time with their owners, and while they have a reputation for their relaxed qualities, they can also be very playful.
10. Havanese
Havanese dogs are toy breeds that weigh anywhere from 9 to 16 pounds. They are great because their silky coats almost never shed. They are big cuddle babies that are friendly and easy-going, and they aren’t big barkers and are easy to train. They adapt well to their environment and get along well with children. They’re such easygoing small dogs, it’s no wonder they’re so popular!
These small dogs are some of the most enjoyable dogs to own because they are as easygoing as they are easy to get around.
